An investment of over 7 million euros to protect Pampelonne Bay.
What is posidonia?
Posidonia is a flowering plant endemic to the Mediterranean that can reach 150cm in height.
It grows at depths of between 0m and 38m.
Its growth is particularly slow: between 1cm and 3cm per year.
Ecological importance of posidonia
Posidonia meadows protect the coastline against erosion, stabilize the seabed, absorb carbon and produce oxygen. They are also indicators of water quality, and the habitat of over 400 plant species and several thousand animal species.
Anchoring regulations
The creation of this 210-buoy Zone de Mouillage et d’Équipements Légers (ZMEL) aims to protect Posidonia meadows from damage caused by ship anchoring.
7 million euros invested in the installation
The equipment is installed using ecological anchors adapted to the type of substrate, with a minimum footprint on the seabed. They are raised so as to preserve Posidonia growth before being dismantled out of season.
